THE CHILDREN'S PLACE PROGRAM

The summer camp retreat for children of alcoholics is run annually by The Children’s Place Program, located in Redwood City, California. Since its inception in 1978, The Children’s Place Program has served thousands of children in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. It is believed to be the longest-running program of its kind in the country.

The Children’s Place Program was founded by Jerry Moe, M.A. at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City in response to an overwhelming need among young children growing up with alcohol and/or
drug-addicted parents.

While Kids Kamp, the summer camp retreat Jerry Moe also started, was the focus of the documentary Lost Childhood: Growing Up in an Alcoholic Family, The Children’s Place Program also provides weekly alcohol/drug prevention education group support services throughout the year to high-risk children, ages 5-13, at local community sites and in elementary schools. It serves 300 children a year.

On the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 2003, The Children’s Place Program received special recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives for its pioneering work and outstanding program with children growing up in families affected by alcoholism or addiction. The congressional proclamation called The Children’s Place Program “an exceptional resource for our community and our country” in its work to end the cycle of addiction.

The Children’s Place Program is now funded and administered by the non-profit Legacy Foundation . Persons interested in obtaining The Children’s Place Program curriculum, technical assistance or training can contact:
